About Apostryphal
Apostryphal is an informal comparison of Toronto's past and present through archival and contemporary photographs.
The archival photographs posted on Apostryphal are sourced through the City of Toronto Archives and Toronto Transit Commission. The contemporary photos are taken by me (Brad Suisham), beginning in 2009.
My work on Apostryphal follows some loose conventions:
- I approximate archival photographs of Toronto in the present-day city.
- Archive photos tend to appear in black and white, and contemporary photos tend to be in colour.
- The primary function of contemporary photos is to serve as visual reference points for the archival images. As such, I'm content to post shots that would have little merit on their own.
- I break the rules I've laid out for myself when I see an opportunity to take a more pleasing photograph or when the contemporary location does not afford an adequate visual reference point.
